You may have heard the term "whimsigoth" bandied about a lot recently; despite describing an aesthetic style that emerged in the 90's, it's on the rise yet again! Fuelled by quite a lot of nostalgia for these days, as well as pushback against the minimalism, Scandinavian, and modern farmhouse trends of the 2010's, people are looking to create cosy, nostalgic, and personal spaces to retreat to from the outside world.
Truthfully, it's not an aesthetic you can completely buy out of a catalogue (trust us, we see the irony of writing this!) - instead, it speaks of a space that feels lived in and loved, with trinkets amassed simply because you like them. However, there are small steps you can take to building up the look, and we've gathered our favourite items that would suit this aesthetic perfectly.
Nautical Ammonite Fossil Decorative Display Dish
This stunning quirky ceramic trinket tray, crafted to look just like an ammonite fossil, brings that real sense of eclectic-ness and eccentricity so core to the whimsigoth aesthetic.
WHAT IS WHIMSIGOTH?While whimsigothic decor had its roots and peak in the late 80's and early 90's, it was only in 2020 when it was given its name by Evan Collins of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute. Combining gothic themes with a more playful, bohemian twist, the aesthetic is present in both fashion and interior décor. It often overlaps with witchcore, cottagecore, and more traditionally gothic items, but definitely stands out on its own. For media inspirations, think Hocus Pocus, Charmed, Practical Magic or Sabrina the Teenage Witch; and for people, look to 90's era Stevie Nicks and Lisa Bonet for style!

layer rich textures
For your textiles, look to lush velvets, Persian rugs, and soft leathers, mixed up with detailed lace and frills galore! Vintage tapestries, stacks of mismatched pillows, and combining sheer curtains with heavier drapes all contribute to the final look.
utilise bold colours and patterns
Don't be afraid to clash bold patterns! Jewel tones, dark and rich wood, and gilded accents lend themselves best to creating a whimsigothic feel. Celestial motifs and floral patterns are key, and stained glass adds to the mood perfectly.
More is More
Opulence and maximalism are the key to whimsigoth; fill the space with quirky trinkets and cosy cushions! Look to TV series such as Charmed or Sabrina the Teenage Witch - if your space feels a bit like a cluttered apothecary, you're definitely doing it right.
thrift, upcycle, and mix-and-match
For a complete whimsigothic restyle, it's best cultivated over time; scour online marketplaces and boot sales for those striking furniture pieces! By combining mismatched pieces that you like, and upcycling bits and bobs yourself, you'll create that air of eccentricity naturally.
